Reopening amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic

Many businesses, from small corner stores to large corporations are faced with the same unprecedented predicament- what can be done to “properly” reopen? While many businesses have the option to become more virtual, many others do not, making reopening safely the number one priority to survive economic devastation or even permanent closure.

The CDC recommends the following well-known options for reducing exposure to COVID and other disease-causing agents: more frequent and thorough cleaning, the wearing of masks and other PPE, reduced facility capacity, and social distancing.

As restrictions begin to loosen and more doors open, OSHA recommends that business owners and employers promptly develop an Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response Plan based on guidance from federal, state, and local health agencies, in accordance with the most current government mandates. This plan should include basic infection prevention measures, such as increased handwashing, access to hand sanitizer with 60+% alcohol, proper cough etiquette, and encouraging that all employees and customers do not enter the premise when sick.

The plan should also include policies and procedures to identify sick people where appropriate, such as taking temperature before a shift start or change. In order to discourage attendance of employees that feel unwell but fear repercussions, OSHA recommends that the employer develop, implement, and communicate workplace flexibilities and protections, again in accordance with the law and most current executive orders.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association, AIHA, has created the “Back to Work Safely” initiative.

This hones in on industry-specific reopenings, as each business sector faces its own unique set of challenges when opening its doors. Gyms will not face the same issues as a restaurant or retail store. Attorneys offices have different shared spaces and interactions than a day care. Regardless of each business’s unique circumstances, NeverGerms has a supplemental solution for all doors that are opening in the near future.
